Oviedo is the political capital of Asturias and an old town to wander without rushing: a Gothic cathedral with the Cámara Santa (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Plaza del Fontán with its Thursday and Sunday market, and Calle Gascona — the “cider street” — with its row of cider houses.
On the edge of town, the Naranco hill holds the two gems of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, both 9th century. Essential for understanding early-medieval Asturian art.
It’s 95 minutes from Alles on the A-8. It pairs well with Gijón for a “two capitals” day out, or better still, give Oviedo a full day at an unhurried pace.
