Colombres

Capital of the Ribadedeva municipality and a benchmark for indiano architecture in Asturias. Home to the Archivo de Indianos in the La Quinta Guadalupe mansion.

Colombres has probably the highest concentration of indiano architecture in all of Asturias — the mansions built by emigrants who returned with fortunes made in the Americas. Colourful façades, gardens with palm trees and viewing terraces that recall the wave of returnees who came back wealthy between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The centrepiece is La Quinta Guadalupe, a 1906 mansion that now houses the Archivo de Indianos — Museum of Emigration: the best account available for understanding what the indiano phenomenon was, how it was funded and what it left behind in the Asturian landscape.

Twenty-five minutes from Alles, Colombres works well combined with the Pindal cave (a five-minute drive away) or with La Franca beach.
