Gijón is a city built around its beach: San Lorenzo, a kilometre and a half of sand, runs along the front of the old town. Behind it, the old fishermen’s quarter of Cimavilla — once a Roman peninsula — is where you’ll find the cider houses, the taverns and the best of the nightlife.
At the top of Cimavilla stands Eduardo Chillida’s “Elogio del horizonte”, one of his most visited sculptures: a sculptural lookout open to the Cantabrian Sea that has become a symbol of the city. The Aquarium, the Universidad Laboral and the Atlantic Botanical Garden round out the main attractions.
It’s 105 minutes from Alles on the A-8. A good plan: a walk along San Lorenzo, a cider house in Cimavilla, then “Elogio del horizonte” at sunset.
