Llanes is the main town in eastern Asturias. It still has its 13th-century medieval walls standing, a working fishing harbour and an old town where indiano mansions sit alongside whitewashed fishermen’s houses.
The Paseo de San Pedro, along the cliff top, gives you one of the most photographed views in Asturias: the town, the Picos de Europa behind and the Cantabrian Sea opening out. The Cubes of Memory — the work of Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola, who painted the concrete blocks of the harbour — are worth the walk.
There’s plenty to eat: cider houses, fish restaurants, traditional bakeries. And the municipality takes in more than 30 beaches along its coast, among the best on the Cantabrian shore.
