El Pindal cave, in Pimiango (Ribadedeva), is part of the group of caves with Palaeolithic rock art in northern Spain declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Its best-known image is the “mammoth”, one of the few depicted in Cantabrian rock art.
The visit brings together two things: the cave paintings — bison, horses, fish and abstract signs from 13,000 to 18,000 years ago — and the setting itself, high on a cliff above the Cantabrian Sea, with wide views out over the water.
Numbers are limited and the visit must be guided, so booking ahead is strongly advised. Twenty-five minutes from Alles. A good plan: El Pindal cave in the morning, lunch in Colombres and La Franca beach in the afternoon.
