La Loja cave, in El Mazo (Peñamellera Baja), is part of the group of caves with Palaeolithic rock art in northern Spain that make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the lesser-known of the group, which is exactly why it has kept the feel of a quiet, intimate visit.
Its engravings — deer and cattle dating back some 18,000 years — sit in a small gallery reached after a walk through the cave. Visitor numbers are kept strictly low, and entry is always with a guide and by prior booking.
The advantage over Altamira or Tito Bustillo: La Loja is only 15 minutes from Alles. A short, vivid visit, and a good plan for a morning before lunch at one of the restaurants in Panes.
