The Cares river: swimming and fishing

Clear-water pools and river salmon. The Cares is one of the great trout and salmon rivers of northern Spain.

The Cares river is one of the great rivers of the Cantabrian coast: it rises in the Picos de Europa and runs across the whole of eastern Asturias before joining the Deva. Along its course it forms pools of clear water, some deep, some shallow, that make good spots for a swim in summer.

The most popular pools lie between Poncebos and Arenas de Cabrales, where the river runs hemmed in but accessible. The water is very cold, coming off the high snowfields and springs, so it isn’t for long swims, but it’s ideal after a walk. Take care with the currents and pick out the safe pools before getting in.

The Cares is also one of the great salmon and trout rivers of northern Spain. Fishing is regulated, requiring a licence and specific stretches, so check with the Principality of Asturias before you head out. The salmon season runs from March to July. The nearest stretches are 20 minutes from Alles.
