Kayaking the Deva

Paddling the Deva river in an open kayak. Stretches of calm water with gentle rapids. Suitable for beginners with an instructor.

The Deva river rises in the Picos de Europa and flows into the Tina Mayor estuary, on the Asturias–Cantabria border. Along its middle stretch, between Panes and Unquera, it makes for an open-kayak run that’s ideal for beginners and families: calm water with the odd gentle rapid, riverside woodland and frequent birdwatching.

Local outdoor-activity companies run the trip — kit, qualified instructor, transport back and wetsuit all included. The season runs from May to September, when the water level and temperature are right.

The usual starting point is fifteen minutes from Alles. If you’re coming with children, check the minimum age with each company (usually 7-8).

There are local outdoor-activity companies you can contact for prices and to book the activity.
